KUALA LUMPUR, 10 April 2025 – Volvo Car Malaysia has officially unveiled the Volvo EX90, the marque’s first fully electric seven-seater SUV, designed to be the safest Volvo yet and now available in the Malaysia as the Ultra Twin variant with the highest powertrain and trim specifications.
The EX90 is Volvo’s flagship SUV of many firsts, including being the first to incorporate lidar, the first to be fully software-driven, and the first Volvo car built with hardware in anticipation of fully autonomous driving.
Through its uniquely Scandinavian design approach, the Volvo EX90 is built as an elegant, efficient, fully electric family car. To optimise driving range, the sleek and rounded front, flush glazing and door handles work to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.29 without compromising the iconic road presence of this modern Volvo SUV.
Despite its local nomenclature, The EX90 Ultra Twin for Malaysia comes with Performance all-wheel drive software that unlocks a maximum of 380 kW or 517 hp of power and 910 Nm of torque, propelling it from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Power comes from a 111 kWh lithium-ion nickel-rich NMC battery with 107 kWh of usable capacity that can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 30 minutes2, enabling a range of up to 623 km on the WLTP testing cycle3.
The EX90 comes with a laminated panoramic sunroof, Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, 360-degree camera with 3D view, powered tailgate and folding third-row seats, and four-zone climate control. The Ultra trim for the local market includes active chassis with air suspension, first-row seat massage and power side bolsters, power release and soft-close doors, 21-inch eight-spoke Aero wheels, and laminated side and rear windows.
The EX90 will be offered in four colours – Onyx Black, Crystal White, Vapour Grey, and a new Sand Dune colourway – whereas customers can choose between Charcoal or Cardamom interiors and Nordico upholstery paired with FSC™-certified natural Birch Wood décor.
Built to be the Safest Volvo to Date
The EX90 is designed to be the safest Volvo car to date, protecting people both inside and outside the car through Safe Space Technology – Volvo’s suite of passive and active safety features – now powered by core computing to create a real-time, 360-degree understanding of its surroundings.
Safe Space Technology encompasses automatic braking, steering, lane-keeping aids and alerts that act as a co-pilot in every modern Volvo car. The EX90 can alert the driver in the case of a potential collision, whether front or rear, and automatically take action by braking and steering.
With the lane-keeping aid, oncoming traffic & run-off road mitigation and vulnerable road user detection functions, the EX90 can keep drivers centred on the lane, reduce the risk of colliding with other road users, and even watch for pedestrians and motorcyclists sharing the road. Just like the Volvo EX30, the EX90 also has a door opening alert to help prevent “dooring” accidents that happen when pedestrians or motorists approach from behind an opening door.
The all-new new Driver Understanding Technology in the EX90 uses cameras, sensors and proprietary software to monitor drivers’ attention, alert them if they are drowsy or distracted, and even come to a safe stop, activate hazard lights and call for emergency services if the driver becomes suddenly ill or unconscious.
Another new feature debuting in the EX90 is the Occupant Sensing system that scans the entire cabin and trunk for movements the moment the car is locked to ensure no family member or pet is left behind. If it detects a forgotten occupant, the car will alert the driver through flashing lights, the car horn, and notifications on the Volvo Cars App while turning on climate controls.
The EX90 features a new-generation Pilot Assist that takes the burden off daily commutes and long highway journeys. It keeps an eye on the traffic and lane markings and supports drivers by adapting the speed and steering assistance to help keep the car centred in its lane while maintaining distance to the vehicle in front. Also new for the EX90’s Pilot Assist is the Lane Change Assist function, where drivers simply turn on the indicators for the car to automatically and safely change lanes when an opening is available.
Using navigation data, the car can also adapt speed in curves to optimise ride comfort. Pilot Assist will also in near future interact with the car’s navigation system to help decisions for lane positioning and overtaking of other vehicles.
Human-centric Technology
Built around and for people, the interior of the Volvo EX90 is inspired by a Scandinavian living room, featuring natural, recycled and renewable materials to create a calm, clean interior that exudes sustainable luxury. The theatre-style, orthopaedic-designed seats ensure comfort at any row, featuring a massage function for the first-row seats and a convertible child booster seat on the second row. Both the first and second row side seats are ventilated for additional comfort.
The EX90 has the quietest cabin of any Volvo car to date, thanks to vibration-absorbing chassis, improved sound insulation, and double-laminated glass. This allows occupants to truly enjoy the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity sound system with 25 speakers throughout the cabin including the front headrests for immersive Dolby Atmos music and clear hands-free calls.
The top-end Bowers & Wilkins sound system can be further tailored for different modes, including the acoustic ambiance of the Concert Hall in Volvo’s home city of Gothenburg, and can be adjusted for driver or passenger-focused sound so different occupants can enjoy music and conversations at the same time.
The compliant chassis in the EX90 is designed to give drivers a plush yet dynamic handling experience. Its upgraded air suspension works together with an active chassis that monitors the car, road and driver 500 times per second to give the most comfortable ride possible. Air suspension allows the EX90 to automatically lower itself by 20 mm for better aerodynamics at speed or raise ride height by 40 mm such as when off-road mode is activated for rough or flooded terrain.
The EX90’s one-pedal drive maximises the smooth, powerful characteristic of this fully electric SUV by offering a controlled balance of acceleration and regenerative braking. One-pedal drive can be easily selected through the central display or customisable steering wheel button and has a new “Auto” mode that allows more battery regeneration in slower traffic and more cruising at higher speeds for maximum efficiency.
The EX90 also comes with Volvo’s industry-leading Interior Air Quality System that filters up to 95 percent of all PM 2.5 particles inside the cabin and 99.9 percent of grass, tree and weed pollen allergens from incoming air. Additionally, the system can remove more than 97 percent of airborne viruses entering cabin and remove existing viral levels in the vehicle by up to 95 percent. Occupants can monitor air quality levels in real time via the CleanZone in-car app and perform focused air cleaning for maximum filtration.
The EX90 is the first Volvo car to feature SunLike interior lighting that mimics natural light. This new, non-flickering lighting enables low light reflection and a high colour index that helps reduce eyestrain and headaches while maintaining occupants’ natural circadian rhythms.
SunLike lights are already used to bring natural light to interior spaces in residential spaces, hospitals, schools, museums and horticultural applications, and Volvo Cars is the first to introduce this LED technology to a production vehicle. All non-decorative lights in the Volvo EX90 interior on the ceiling, floor, door pocket or trunk come with SunLike LEDs as standard.
The EX90 also features with digital phone key technology, where a smartphone or smartwatch can automatically unlock the car and load your personal profile automatically as you approach the car. Owners can also share and control access to digital keys remotely.
Finally, the EX90 features High-Definition Pixel headlights that have 1.3 million pixels in each module for optimum lighting in any conditions. When driving in the dark, advanced active high-beam technology allows drivers to stay on high beam the entire time, with the car identifying oncoming road users and adjusting sections accordingly to prevent dazzling others. Up to five cars and three objects can be auto-dimmed at the same time.
