Alor Gajah, 10 March 2026 – SAIC Motor Malaysia today marked a major milestone with the first line-off of the locally assembled MG S5 EV, signalling the official start of local production for MG vehicles in Malaysia.
The ceremony took place at the PEPS-JV (Melaka) assembly facility in Alor Gajah, where the first locally assembled MG S5 EV officially rolled off the production line.
The milestone event was graced by several distinguished guests including Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka, together with YB Datuk P. Shanmugam A/L V. Pitchay, EXCO for Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and YB Datuk Wira Azhar bin Arshad, Melaka State Secretary.
Representing the automotive industry were Mr Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, Mr Hoffen Teh, Chief Operating Officer of SAIC Motor Malaysia, Mr Hamidon bin Abdullah, Executive Chairman of EP Manufacturing Berhad, and Mr Aidan Bin Hamidon, Executive Director of EP Manufacturing Berhad.
The ceremony marks the next phase of SAIC Motor Malaysia’s localisation strategy following the announcement in October 2025 to begin local assembly operations in partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB).
“This first line-off of the MG S5 EV CKD represents a significant milestone for MG in Malaysia and reflects our long-term commitment to localisation and strengthening Malaysia’s role in the regional electric vehicle ecosystem,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia.
“With local assembly, we are able to bring our vehicles closer to Malaysian customers while strengthening the country’s automotive supply chain, supporting local vendors, and contributing to the broader EV ecosystem.”
Built on MG’s dedicated rear-wheel-drive electric platform, the MG S5 EV combines dynamic driving performance with everyday practicality.
Compared to the earlier imported CBU version, the locally assembled CKD model introduces an increased power output of 151kW, up from 125kW, while torque has been improved to 350Nm, delivering stronger acceleration and enhanced driving dynamics.
The MG S5 EV supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 150kW, enabling the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes under optimal conditions. The vehicle also features a horizontal ultra-thin battery layout, which contributes to a lower centre of gravity, improved cabin space and enhanced stability.
The MG S5 EV LUX variant further enhances comfort and convenience with additional premium features including full leatherette seats, ventilated front seats and a power-adjustable front passenger seat, along with a hands-free power tailgate for improved practicality. With a driving range of up to 446km (WLTP), the MG S5 EV offers the flexibility required for both daily commuting and longer journeys.
Safety remains a key priority for MG, with the S5 EV equipped with seven airbags and the brand’s ADAS 2.5 advanced driver assistance system, which includes features such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control.
The model has also achieved five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP, reflecting MG’s commitment to global safety standards.
To ensure peace of mind for EV ownership, the MG S5 EV is backed by an 8-year / 180,000km battery pack warranty, together with an 8-year / 160,000km warranty for the motor control unit.
SAIC Motor Malaysia’s collaboration with EP Manufacturing Berhad will also support the development of Malaysia’s automotive vendor ecosystem through localisation of components and supply chain partnerships.
“We are proud to partner with SAIC Motor Malaysia in bringing MG’s first locally assembled electric vehicle to life in Melaka,” said Encik Hamidon bin Abdullah, Executive Chairman of EP Manufacturing Berhad. “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing Malaysia’s automotive industry through localisation and innovation.”
For Melaka, the project represents an important addition to the state’s industrial landscape. “The local assembly of the MG S5 EV reflects growing confidence in Melaka’s industrial capabilities and reinforces the state’s position as a strategic hub for advanced automotive manufacturing,” said Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka.
The Pegoh facility is capable of assembling battery electric vehicles (BEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and internal combustion engine (ICE) models, supporting MG’s broader regional growth strategy.
Production capacity for the MG S5 EV is expected to reach between 120 and 180 units per month, with an estimated annual output of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles in 2026.
Beyond vehicle assembly, the initiative is expected to contribute to job creation, technology transfer, and the development of local automotive expertise, further strengthening Malaysia’s position within the ASEAN automotive industry.
Bookings for the MG S5 EV will open immediately starting 10 March 2026, with an estimated MSRP of RM120,000, positioning the model as one of the most accessible electric vehicles in its segment. Final pricing will be announced in a separate press release during the vehicle’s official launch in the coming weeks.
To commemorate the start of local production, MG Motor Malaysia is also introducing an Early Bird promotion for the locally assembled MG S5 EV. The package offers a total value of up to RM10,000, consisting of a RM7,000 rebate, a 7kW wallbox charger worth RM2,000, and RM1,000 in charging credits.
