Sushil brings over 28 years of experience in the energy sector as well as the expertise needed to drive the transition towards a decarbonised future
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – 2 December 2022 – Clean energy solutions provider Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari) has appointed energy industry leader Sushil Purohit as its inaugural Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective 16 January 2023.
Sushil, who was most recently the President of Wärtsilä Energy as well as Executive Vice President and Member of the Board of Management at Wärtsilä Corporation, brings over 28 years of global energy industry experience to Gentari. His expertise and experience in the new energy sector spans over 70 countries, with a demonstrated track record overseeing operations in the Americas, Middle East, Asia and Australia.
Under his leadership, Wärtsilä Energy grew to become a key player in the grid scale energy storage market as well as a top technology provider in Grid Balancing Engine Power Plants. The decarbonisation services business launched under his leadership further enables customers to achieve their decarbonisation goals rapidly, in a more economical and reliable manner.
On this announcement, Chairman of Gentari, Datuk Tengku Muhammad Taufik, said:
“Sushil’s vast global experience in the new energy industry will be a tremendous asset as he leads the Gentari team to venture into new markets. Building on the gains we have made since Gentari was first introduced, Sushil will aim to unlock new avenues in our quest to deliver clean energy solutions and capture opportunities in the energy transition. The Board expects that the calibre and industry experience that he brings will synergise well with the capabilities of our Malaysian leadership team, as he guides Gentari towards becoming an integrated net zero solutions provider, with an immediate focus on building its three core pillars of Renewable Energy, Hydrogen and Green Mobility.”
Sushil added:
“The pace at which the energy transition has been developing globally is exciting and I am pleased to be playing a greater role here. It is both an honour and a privilege to be named the CEO of Gentari and I wish to thank Datuk Tengku Taufik and the Board of Gentari for their trust. I hope to make an impact in driving growth in the clean energy landscape, particularly in key markets where Gentari seeks to make inroads.”
He further added, ”The world is moving rapidly towards a cleaner energy future, across a variety of industries and markets, offering Gentari numerous opportunities to support energy transition for our partners, customers and the society.”
As CEO, Sushil will be leading a high-calibre team consisting of experienced energy professionals, both Malaysian and international, as Gentari pursues its 2030 global aspirations to build a renewable energy capacity of 30-40 GW, produce up to 1.2 mtpa of clean hydrogen, and capture 10% market share (25,000 public charging points) of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem across key markets in Asia Pacific.
Rounding up the year, Datuk Tengku Muhammad Taufik shared that the progress achieved by Gentari thus far sets a strong foundation for the company to build on. In March, PETRONAS announced its intention to set up a clean energy entity, which was shortly followed by Gentari’s introduction in June and its launch in September officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Since then, Gentari has continued to make positive strides in all three of its business verticals:
- achieved 1.12 GW of renewable energy capacity in operations and under development globally including the successful commissioning of a major Open Access project in Uttar Pradesh, India (56.5 MW) as well as delivering Malaysia’s largest single rooftop solar installation (7.4 MW) at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and the country’s largest self-consumption ground-mounted solar installation (40 MW) at the Pengerang Integrated Complex.
- progressed its collaborations with over a dozen international and local partners for hydrogen project developments, with four opportunities expected to move into detailed engineering stage by 2023.
- driving the shift to green mobility through the installation of 250 electric vehicle (EV) charging points in Malaysia and India, the establishment of Southeast Asia’s biggest EV charging hub in Suria KLCC, and operationalisation of Southeast Asia’s first 350kW public EV charger. Gentari’s Vehicle-as-a-Service (VaaS) fleet has deployed more than 350 EVs in Malaysia and India to date, with India already achieving 1 million clean kilometres, equivalent to reducing 83.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Gentari’s suite of renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility solutions will be spread across a mix of Malaysian, regional and international projects, to address customer demands and opportunities on the ground.
