Kuala Lumpur, 30 July 2024 – A tyre puncture while on the road can pose a safety hazard and disrupt one’s journey, especially on Malaysian roads that often face heavy rainfall, high traffic volumes, potholes, and road debris. Moreover, the waiting time for assistance and repair can be time consuming and disrupts one’s journey. By having a self-sealing tyre technology in the world today, road users can be more confident in every drive.
Addressing the needs of Malaysians, Continental proudly announces the expansion of its innovative ContiSeal technology to a wider set of products and rim sizes. This introduction aims to make available the offering to a wider range of car owners, enhance safety for drivers, address their unique road challenges and transform the way road users handle tyre puncture situations tomorrow and beyond.
First unveiled in 2003, the ContiSeal technology has been refined for more than two decades, enabling immediate sealing of 80% of all punctures, and 99.9% of tyre punctures up to 5mm in diameter as they occur. Through a vulcanisation process, ContiSeal tyre’s durability and elasticity are enhanced, resulting in reduced cavity noise up to 3dB through its minimised mass space within the tyre.
Capable of plugging holes up to 5mm in diameter, it creates an airtight seal that prevents air from leaking. Applied to the tyre’s inside in the tread area, the sealant layer ensures that the tyre maintains its integrity and performance, even under rigorous and challenging conditions. Therefore, in instances of foreign object penetration, such as nails, there’s no immediate need for roadside tyre changes, and holes remain sealed even when the puncturing object is dislodged.
A testament to its tyre reliability, the performance of the self-sealing technology is unaffected by environmental factors, with a service life that exceeds that of the tyre itself, providing continuous protection throughout the tyre’s lifespan.
Contrary to run-flat tyres, ContiSeal tyres perform like standard tyres without sacrificing comfort and require no specific vehicle modifications. Unlike punctured run-flat tyres, which have limitations on handling, speed, and distance, ContiSeal tyres maintain integrity and performance even after a puncture, allowing unrestricted driving and can be repaired if necessary.
While self-sealing tyres may be more expensive initially, it is cost saving for car owners in the long run, reducing the need for roadside assistance, towing, or replacing tyres frequently. Furthermore, Continental guarantees ContiSeal under their standard manufacturing warranty; in the event of any defect of sealing performance for puncture within 5mm (in the tread area), a pro-rated warranty reimbursement will be provided. In addition, by purchasing the ContiSeal tyres, road users can also benefit from the Total Confidence Plan (TCP), which provides a one-to-one tyre replacement for unexpected road damage within the first year, with claims easily managed through the Conti TCP app.
Although ContiSeal offers an immediate fix, follow-up maintenance ensures long-term safety and performance. Due to its effective self-sealing ability, many drivers may not notice any puncture or sharp objects penetrated into ContiSeal tyre. Continental recommends using a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to monitor any tyre pressure drop and regular tyre check by tyre specialist to ensure ongoing tyre integrity and product longevity. It is advised that drivers visit a dealer for a thorough inspection to prevent moisture from entering the tyre through any puncture, which could potentially damage its internal structure.
Continental aims to fully incorporate the ContiSeal technology by July 2024 across the popular tyre models, the UltraContact UC7, PremiumContact C and UltraContact UC6 SUV, in sizes ranging from 16” to 20”. Available at any participating dealers nationwide or on Continental’s official Shopee and Lazada e-commerce stores, this strategic move signifies Continental’s commitment to expanding the reach of this innovative technology to more Malaysians.
