Porsche China unveils chance-of-a-lifetime Junior Programme
September 18, 2015.Shanghai. Porsche China today unveiled its groundbreaking Porsche China Junior Programme which is set to attract the most promising motorsport talent across the whole of China and Southeast Asia.
The winner of the 2016 Porsche China Junior Programme selection will receive a season-long contract as the official Porsche China Junior, a funding contribution towards participation in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, season-long professional coaching, entry into a round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, and the potential for nomination to the end-of-season Porsche Motorsport International Junior Programme.
Commented Porsche Motorsport Manager, Alexandre Gibot: “The new Porsche China Junior Programme is the single biggest opportunity ever presented to young sportscar drivers across Southeast Asia and karters throughout China. The programme will harness more than 60 years of Porsche Motorsport success around the world to power the most effective development programme the region has seen.
“The Porsche China Junior 2016 will be given exactly the same opportunities as his or her counterparts in Europe, where all 19 of the Junior drivers so far have made the grade as professional racing drivers. Five former Juniors are today Porsche works drivers: Timo Bernhard, Marc Lieb, Patrick Long, Michael Christensen, and Earl Bamber.”
Since the stratospheric career elevation of 2013 and 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion Bamber to Porsche works driver and 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans LMP1 winner, via the Porsche Motorsport International Cup Scholarship, participation in the region’s leading sportscar championship has become the burning ambition of countless drivers.
The Porsche China Junior Programme selection process encompasses both existing young talent from across the region, as well as fledgling Chinese karters and drivers competing at the grassroots level.
The Programme, which is fully funded by Porsche China, will select Chinese karters and drivers with the greatest potential from across three karting competitions held in different cities in China between October 5 and 17: In Beijing, at the Red 1 International Karting Circuit; Zhuhai’s Golden Apple Karting Circuit; and the Max-Light Karting Club in Shanghai Registration for any one of the three events is open to all Chinese karters and drivers aged between 16 and under 25 on January 1, 2016, and the top three will go through to the Best of the Cities finale to be held in Shanghai International Circuit’s KartWorld on October 23. The best three in that competition will qualify for a place in the Porsche China Junior shootout to be held at the Shanghai International and Tianma circuits from October 31 to November 3.
Current drivers from China and Southeast Asian nations who meet the age and eligibility criteria are invited to submit a full CV to email@example.com before October 17. The Programme selection committee will choose six candidates from amongst the eligible applicants to take part in November’s shootout which will include attendance at the finale rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia at the FIA World Endurance Championship in Shanghai, followed by two days of evaluation
The shootout will include thorough fitness and aptitude assessments for all nine candidates, on-track evaluation in both Porsche road cars as well as the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 991). Candidates will be evaluated on their potential and willingness to learn, natural talent, knowledge of the sport, and professionalism in their approach to their careers.
The evaluation panel and shootout team will include experienced coaches, successful professional drivers, one of the world’s most respected motorsport fitness trainers and senior management from Porsche China.
From the six drivers and three Chinese grassroots candidates, one will earn the title of Porsche China Junior 2016, and take the first step towards potentially following in the footsteps of international sportscar racing’s newest superstar, Bamber.
